How do I negotiate bills for lower rates?
Negotiating bills is a tactic many are using to help their current financial situations. To do so, we suggest listing out monthly bills that you would consider essential expenses. Top examples being PG&E, cell phone, internet, or cable. Next, reach out to a representative from the companies you have determined to be essential service providers to discuss potential options as many companies are being flexible with payments, according to Ben Kurland, co-founder of BillFixers.
U.S. News has specific tips and tricks that may help you with negotiating:
- Ask open-ended questions to avoid any yes or no questions
- Be polite and listen
- Don’t be content with the first offer, you can always ask for more
Remember you won’t receive a lower rate if you don’t ask. If you cannot get a lower rate ask if they provide any other things for saving or for a loyalty discount. However, be wary of accepting any additional service increases or freebies as those may come with an increase in price over elapsed time.
