What can I do if I can't pay rent?
The CARES Act includes a 120 day moratorium on evictions and late fees for properties that are secured by a government-backed mortgage. Various states have temporary eviction moratoriums as well. You may also want to speak with your landlord on what you can and cannot do financially. Coming to an agreement with your landlord can assist with your financial situation as they might be able to accept a partial payment or defer your rent for this time. Be transparent with them, but also keep in mind that a deferral or reduction in rent isn’t necessarily rent forgiveness. Be sure to communicate when you foresee paying back rent owed for a better chance of receiving any accommodation.
