Can I file for unemployment benefits as self-employed or an independent contractor?
Yes, the CARES Act has established the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program which assists those who aren’t eligible for filing for regular unemployment benefits. Individuals who identify as self-employed, seeking part-time employment, or wouldn’t qualify for regular unemployment compensation may potentially sign up under the PUA program. Although PUA is administered by the states, its federally funded and is subject to federal guidelines.
