Emergency fund - yes or now? And how much?

How much money should ideally set aside to cover potential emergencies? Is there a "magic" $$ number I should aim for? Thanks.

  If you have debt, I recommend do the starter emergency fund of $1,000. I really like this Dave Ramsey's 7 Baby Steps  to save for emergencies, pay off all your debt for good,

  Enough to cover 3-6 months of expenses is a solid emergency fund.
